Questions you have to ask yourself before buying a Digital Camcorder

Before you purchase a new digital camcorder either for yourself or for your loved one, you have to ask yourself a few questions if you need to purchase the right camcorder. The more you know about your needs for buying a camcorder the easier it will be for a seller to assist you in finding a perfect one. Ask yourself the following questions.

What is the main purpose for buying the camcorder?
The answer for this question is very important because digital camcorders with different modes are available for different purposes. For example, camcorder with a sports mode will be best for shooting outdoor game scenes and camcorder with good night vision or low light mode is best for shooting dance recitals.

What is my budget?
The answer for this question is the most important thing because you need to make your final decision for choosing a camcorder model based on this answer. Different camcorder models can range from $20 to a few hundred dollars. The price difference is based on resolution or other extra features.

Which media do I prefer?
The most fundamental way to classify camcorders is the type of media to which it records the video data. Each type of media has its own benefits and drawbacks. The most popular media is MiniDV which records the highest quality video. MiniDV is best for editing. The ultra-small camcorders record to flash media such as SD cards, Memory Sticks, etc. The DVD media can compress video efficiently than MiniDV, and is more convenient. DVD is best for instant gratification.

Do I want camcorder with manual control or automatic control feature?
Some camcorders offer features for complete manual control over all the typical settings such as white balance, exposure, focus, shutter speed, and gain. Some camcorders offer automatic mode that enables you to start recording just by hitting a single button. The auto mode camcorders are very easy and accessible. Some camcorders permit users to change a few settings even in auto mode.

Do I need to use expandable battery or backup battery?
Generally, the camcorder batteries don’t last much longer than an hour. The two solutions for this is to either carry a backup battery or to purchase an expandable battery designed to provide longer life. A camcorder with provision for an expandable battery can give you plenty of time to shoot pictures.

Do I need a simple or stylish model camcorder?
It is not recommended to use camcorders that are extremely stylish if you are totally new to camcorders or if you don’t have much experience in shooting. Select a camcorder having provision for expandable battery if you are a beginner or still learner as the battery used in this type of camcorder can last longer and give you plenty of time to shoot.

What ports does the camcorder have?
Most camcorders have at least two ports, namely, USB port and A/V port. MiniDV camcorders will also have a DV port. Some camcorders have a few other ports such as S-Video port, flash media port, etc. In general, the more ports your camcorder has the better your camcorder will be.

Before you make your final decision, make sure that the retailer permits you to return your camcorder within a time limit if its features don’t work properly.
