HP laptop blast, sets fire to kitchen in Auckland (Feb 18, 2009)

On the morning of February 6th, Mrs Light had been using the laptop in bed, plugged up into the AC wall socket. Then she unplugged and take it to the kitchen. The laptop battery had been trailing capacity over a period of time and then it was not able to grasp a charge, so the laptop shut down straight away.

After placing the laptop on the kitchen bench, Mrs. Light has gone from that room to start several house works. She played her home stereo, but within one minute, she heard a blast that is more audible than the sound from the stereo.

She returned to the kitchen to find flames. She saw her HP laptop explodes and sets fire to kitchen. Fire was leaping higher than her head. She had to put it out herself.

Mrs. Light had set of steps to the HP hotline to protest about the crisis with her battery in the previous week. But they told that her laptop was just crossed the warranty period and nothing could be done. She asked to converse with manager to make a grievance but the call centre worker said no such person was available for lodging her complaints . At the moment Mrs. Light said that she should be enclosed by the Consumer Guarantees Act as the laptop was above one year old. The call centre operator replied that he knew nothing about that as he was situated in India. Mrs. Light asks to talk a New Zealand representative but was told this was impossible.

The laptop was shifted to New York for testing by Hewlett Packard. But they did not accepting responsibility for the fire that comes into sight to have been started by the laptop's battery.

Warwick Grey who is HP New Zealand's marketing manager for the Personal Systems Group said that there products were developed to set out beyond the suggested security standards and he was not aware of anything in New Zealand during his three years of service at HP, so it is very improbable to be a wider setback with batteries. Mrs. Light says she is grateful of Mr. Kendrick's call and supposes he is legitimately anxious. But in overall, it was not been a good one in dealing with HP's customer care services and she still does not have a replacement laptop.

Mrs. Light refuses to make a claim on her personal insurance as she thought HP was at liability. HP finally decided to send around a self-governing insurance appraiser, who, Mrs Light says, was surprised by what he saw.

HP may not be accepting liability at this point, Mrs Light says, but she supposes when tests on the laptop are completed the company will have no choice but to accept liability. She does not know of, she says, any other possible cause for the fire.

Laptop battery produce fire Dunedin nursing home (Jan 28, 2009)

On Monday, Jan 26th, 2009 at Dunedin, New Zealand three dozen people were vacated from a nursing home later than a laptop battery burst out and cause a fire.

William McElligott , Chief of Dunedin Fire Division said that the fire happened about 8:30 a.m. at the Nurses Helping Hands nursing home on Curlew Road.

McElligott also said that the workers were capable of putting out the fire, which was enclosed in a single room, with an extinguisher.

Fire vulnerability from some laptop batteries has encouraged product recollect in the past. McElligott said he didn’t be familiar with the battery that had trapped fire was subject to a recall.

The fire created thick smoke and thirty six patients and staff members were send away. Three evacuees were treated at the scene, and four were taken to the hospital but their conditions were not considered life-threatening.

Hitachi Maxell to Release Leak-free Alkaline Battery (Jan 20, 2009)

Hitachi Maxell Ltd developed a new product to be added to its alkaline battery line "Voltage," which employs the "zero-leakage design" to prevent liquid leak due to over-discharge, etc.

The new product (also called "Voltage") will be released April 1, 2009. The company developed a new zinc alloy to reduce the amount of residual, undischarged zinc, which causes leakage.

According to the results of Hitachi Maxell's survey, over-discharge accounts for 55% of all leakage causes. When a battery is over-discharged, hydrogen gas is rapidly produced inside it, raising the internal pressure. Therefore, to prevent explosion, batteries have a safety valve to discharge hydrogen gas. However, when this valve works, alkaline solution flows out together with the gas.

In order to prevent the leakage, it is required to reduce the amount of undischarged zinc, which cause the generation of hydrogen gas. But it is difficult to use up zinc because zinc oxide surrounds undischarged zinc and blocks electrons.

For the zero-leakage design, Hitachi Maxell made "some improvements to pass electrons even when zinc becomes zinc oxide" and succeeded in reducing the amount of undischarged zinc, said Kenichi Sano, the company's manager of the Planning Department of the Primary Battery Division.

"A surface modification is one of the improvements, but we cannot give further information," he said.

The company calls the new zinc alloy "Microzinc ?." By reducing the amount of undischarged zinc, the life of the new battery is extended by 5%, compared with the existing product released in February 2008.

Lithium batteries be depleted in 16 years? (Jan 06, 2009)

As hybrid electric vehicles use the lithium ion batteries, the prices of batteries for mobile phones and notebook computers will skyrocket in years.

This is a growing concern among experts over the introduction of lithium ion battery for HEVs.

The auto industry will begin to use the lithium ion battery for HEVs. Lithium ion battery has been known as ideal fuel for HEVs as it is light and highly efficient.

But, the problem is the reserves of lithium. The whole reserves of lithium is not enough even to meet the demand for electronic devices like mobile phones and notebook computers.

Experts predict that the reserves of lithium will be depleted in years if HEVs become more available in the future.

Therefore, there are growing voices over the development of a portfolio of other battery resources for eco-friendly vehicles in the future.

? Will it be depleted in 16 years?

The lithium ion batteries are lighter and smaller than nickel metal hydride batteries.

Therefore, the demand for lithium batteries as a second battery has increased.

But, the reserves of lithium will be depleted in 2025 at the current speed of mining.

The lithium reserves are 4.1 million tons. But, annually, 250,000 tons are produced.

The lithium ion batteries are used in mobile phones and notebook computers.

But, if the demand for HEVs is growing, a different story will take place.

If HEVs use the lithium-ion batteries, an average car will consume 200 times as many as mobile phone and 40 times as many as a notebook computers.

If HEVs are introduced with the demand for lithium ion battery, the depletion of lithium will come much faster than expected.

An industry insider said, “Currently, only NiMH batteries are used for HEVs due to the safety concern. But, the lithium batteries will soon be used.

Then, the reserves will be depleted in 7 to 8 years.”

Why Disposable Batteries Cost So Much (Dec 30, 2008)

The main cause that batteries are more costly than a reasonable turnover on their components and assembly cost should make them is that, as in the environmentally inhospitable world of the past, millions of disposable batteries were press backgrounder to decay in landfills and seep out their deadly chemicals, including mercury and lead, into the earth and water. Now that the environment is a major concern, all those chemicals have to be cleaned up, and that clear out has to be paid for.

The true or full cost, of your existing stock disposable batteries includes additional charges to compensate the environmental cleanup needed from the indecent disposal of the batteries of yesteryear.

But charging to the release of your pocket book are those undividable associates, the rechargeable battery, and the battery charger. The moment you make the switch to rechargeables, you will abolish both the business press release costs of restoring your old disposable batteries and your payment to the enduring battery disposal problem.

Cellular Phones and fire (Dec 23, 2008)

The trendy conviction that using a mobile phone at the veranda of a gas station can burst into flames is a myth. This is the rising truth after performing some tests and researches were accomplished in different parts of the globe.

If not cell phones then what triggered those 243 petrol station fires? Discovering the reason behind that entire explosion will be static electricity was found to be the cause. The University of Kent researchers hold static electricity from the body responsible for majority of the fires.

Researchers also found that a lot of fires took place because of static electricity passing from human body. All of us experience these sparks from clothes, in particular synthetic clothes. Human body can build up considerable static charge. Regrettably, if the earth wire on the petrol hose is spoiled, you can release a visible spark when the metal nozzle of the hose contacts the metal neck of the petrol tank. The Possibilities of Cellular Phone Induced Fires

Theoretically, it is feasible to create a blast with a cell phone. For a sparkle to ignite petrol spray, the amount of energy required is just 0.2 mJ, and a cell phone battery stores five-million times that much energy. If only the cell phones were intended to produce sparks, which they are not!

And if battery is the offender part in a cell phone, shouldn’t you be nervous about batteries in your CD player, torch, iPod etc? What about the biggest battery of them all; the car battery sitting under the hood? Some kind of electric current is supposed to start off from a cell phone when you use it that could possibly ignite the petrol vapors. Surely Cell phones will produce sparks but they are too small to produce a gas station fire.

How to Buy a Bargain Laptop (Dec 16, 2008)

Everyone likes a good bargain—the trick is distinguishing what's truly a worthwhile deal from something you may regret after you've used it a while. We define bargain laptops as ones costing $1,000 or less, though you can find great deals at any price. These days, with retailers going the extra mile in an attempt to boost flagging sales, laptops that might otherwise be out of reach for the frugal shopper have been descending into the affordable zone. Here we'll look at what you should be able to get for $1,000 or less.

Design is no longer an afterthought for laptop makers. Why settle for a clunky-looking 'book with so many stylish models available? A lot of attention is being paid to lid decoration. The Dell Studio 15 comes in nine different colors, plus four custom designs. HP laptops such as the HDX16t use a technique called in-mold design, in which inlaid patterns are visible through a laminate coating.

The processor should be 2 GHz or faster; Core 2 Duo is best, although an AMD Turion should also be fine. It should come with at least 2GB of RAM (you'll need that to run Vista effectively), preferably 3GB or 4GB. Integrated graphics are okay, while discrete graphics are better, particularly if you plan to do any 3D gaming or rendering. One caveat: A discrete graphics card uses up more juice, which will reduce battery life. And speaking of batteries, an ideal laptop battery will be at least 50 Wh (watt-hours), six cells or more. Your laptop should come with at least a one-year warranty; two years standard and international warranties are even better.

Most of the laptops in the sub-$1,000 category are thin-and-light mainstream models, but you can also find desktop replacement models, generally larger and better equipped, in that price range. We've seen 17-inch that don't exceed our price limit, though we haven't reviewed any recently. The HP HDX16t boasts a 16-inch screen and home-theater features such as a TV tuner and Blu-ray reader. At 6.8 pounds, it's a bit heavy, but can be lugged in a pinch.

way for the minidisc to change tracks when the CD changes tracks (Dec 10, 2008)

I just got a minidisc player, and after reading instructions thousands of times, I really cant find a way for the minidisc to change tracks when the CD changes tracks.....It keeps on recording a whole album onto track 1......

I found this description that may clear up your question:

Check the Instructions for your recording software on how to put down individual songs as separate "tracks". That will allow you to skip over a complete song at once, and see the songs separately indexed.

Making tracks Unlike a CD filled with computer files, a CD filled with music (CD-DA - CD-Digital Audio, or simply an 'audio CD') is treated differently. First, a computer - be it a PC or CD player - knows that the files contain audio data for playback purposes and second, the files can't be copied simply by dragging and dropping them.

When it comes to creating an audio CD, there's an additional point to bear in mind. All CD recording software offers two options to create an audio CD: track-at-once and disc-at-once.

Track-at-once writes each music track individually and turns off the laser beam between each one. This results in a two-second gap between each track. Disc-at-once writes all of the tracks in one go, without turning off the laser.

This means that the gaps between tracks can be any length you like or there can be no gap at all and the CD recording software should let you specify your preference.

Filtering truth (Nov 19, 2008)

For the majority of UPS systems, there are certain essential filter elements such as input, rectifier, and output. The filters normally apply an arrangement of resistors, inductors, and capacitors to get rid of useless waveform components. Thermal scans normally raise indication when an inductor fails. Capacitors are more analogous to breakdown under pressure. Depending on the capacitor, they were cause to experience fast spreading out and outflow of acidic electrolyte when thy subject to overstressed or drying out in due course.

Hundreds of capacitors wired in series and prearranged in banks virtually in large 3-phase UPS systems. It is not easy to find a single failed capacitor and it consumes lot of time. Performing a relative phase current balance is an easiest way of checking filter integrity.

By inspecting phase current through each leg of the filter, you can formulate a quantitative estimation. A marked difference in phase currents drawn through a filter assembly is a sign that one or more capacitors have corrupted.

The Hero 3 digital camera takes sports photography to the extreme (Nov 06, 2008)

You wouldn't dare strap your pricey digital camera to the front of your bike, no matter how cool the resulting photos might be, would you? You wouldn't tie it to your bike helmet, attach it to the front of your ski jacket, or wrap it around your wrist while climbing or hiking. Your nice digital camera just isn't meant for such use.

But if you've ever thought about such things, the Digital Hero 3 camera is going to make you drool.

Intended for the more aggressive outdoor sports, the Digital Hero 3 camera is a lightweight, bare bones digital camera that comes in a clear protective plastic case. This case snaps shut and is waterproof, dust proof and can take a beating. With an array of kits and accessories, the camera can attach to everything from bikes to kayaks to helmets.

At first it seems like the camera is too basic. There is no preview or display for stored photos, and the viewfinder is awkward (and nearly impossible to use once mounted on handlebars or some such device). But once you realize this camera is not intended to be used as a typical point and shoot, it all makes a lot more sense.

While the photos are certainly not of the same quality as most digital cameras of the day (3 megapixels), the fact that most come in at about 500Kb means your 2 Gb memory card is going to last you a long time. With an option to take a photo every three seconds, that's a huge plus. You'll get a lot of ground and sky shots using the camera in that manner, but you'll also find some real gems buried within (such as shots of your exhausted friends on particularly grueling trips). Some photos have a curved lens effect that is far from technically perfect, but can look pretty cool.

The options are sparse, but are more than enough for the camera's intended uses. Other than simple single photo mode, there is also the option to shoot three photos at a time, or to allow the camera to keep shooting every three seconds until you turn it off. There is also a video option.

Alkaline battery hazards (Oct 30, 2008)

Intake of alkaline batteries creates a possibility of both alimentary tract corrosive wound and foreign body obstacle. Mostly dogs are commonly involved in this kind of activities.

Alkaline batteries are used in most of the electronic products which are being used in houses. For example we say remote controls, hearing aids, dolls, watches, computers, and calculators. Almost all alkaline dry cell batteries make use of potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide to produce current. Nickel-cadmium and lithium batteries also tend to have alkaline material.

The alkaline gel in batteries causes liquefactive necrosis of tissues upon contact, which will make burns and it can go through deeply into tissue. Lithium disc or “button” batteries may stay in the gullet and produce a current beside the esophageal walls, which results in circular ulcers those have the possibility to be perforating. Some battery packs may enclose metals such as zinc or mercury, posturing chance of foreign body obstruction and metal toxics if they stay behind in the stomach for long periods. Moreover disc batteries may be breathe in and create a choking hazard.

Foreign body obstruction may present as nausea, anorexia, abdominal pain. Respiratory obstruction due to battery inhalation may present with acute onset of dyspnea and cyanosis. Mucosal burns may arise inside the oral cavity, esophagus and less commonly in stomach. Damage of the esophagus may show the way to secondary pyothorax, while gastric perforation may result in severe blood loss and/or peritonitis.

Radiographs can facilitate to verify the identification plus the exact place of the battery. Several other diagnoses comprise GI or respiratory foreign bodies and other oral, dermal, or ocular corrosive agents

Maintaining Your UPS Battery (Oct 23, 2008)

Ensure the UPS always remain in contact with its electrical ground. Do not burden it. If you have noticed any signs of delinquency or fault, wrench it until it gets repaired, or just restore it.UPS that you are using has a battery within it. Generally it is a lead-acid type, but both lithium and gel-cel batteries are occasionally used.

The battery is certainly the most susceptible element of your UPS. If you have your UPS for a long time say 2 to 3 years, you will most likely to have some battery problems. You must recalibrate your UPS battery sensor every six months to a year. If you have used the ups battery for several years you ought to replace the batteries.

If you are an IT store with a bunch of UPSes spread over a site, a repair agreement may seem sensible, depending on conditions. If you have a bigger UPS in the range of 5-10 KVA, a service contract may perhaps be an important hedge beside extended downtime.

To extend your battery life

  • Keep away from deep discharges
  • Do not examine them with high temperature, chillness, or moisture.

laptop battery issue-Apple confessed (Oct 13, 2008)

Apple has alleged that some of their batteries in its range of MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops have some performance problems.

They have issued a software update to repair the problem and have offered to put back faulty batteries. The Apple Company said that the performance issues do not make any protection hazards. You may perhaps keep on using your current battery".

Apple says battery packs which are "evidently distorted" are along with the indication of battery problems. The company recommends consumer to install the update on all "MacBook and MacBook Pro computers and additional batteries that were buy between February 2006 and April 2007". Game Players (Sep 23, 2008)

Game Players was a video game journal which published once in a month. It was formerly called Game Player's, with effect from 1988 - 1998. It was published by Imagine Media. But they were a part of Future plc now.

This publication was well-known for the screwy, madcap, fanatical humors that encompass about each and every videogame review and image caption. Reader’s letters came at the starting of the journal and were regularly one of the highlights of the magazine. The magazine frequently incorporated a "newsletter" with mocking jokes about magazine employees and cartoon strips.

The periodical distorted its name to Ultra Game Players in 1996 and bring in a completely special layout. The preface of Ultra Game Players was projected to match with the release of the Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64.

Ultra Game Players characterized a more contemporary design with a redesigned plan that located reader’s letters at the last part of the magazine. One of the motivating features of Ultra Game Players was a "prize store" in which person who reads may answer the trivia questions for chances to prevail prizes. personal digital assistant (PDA) Battery (Sep 17, 2008)

A personal digital assistant often called as PDA is a handheld computer. PDA was intended to substitute non-electronic day planners. Many PDAs can be used as an address book, a calculator, a clock, and a calendar. Some also have playoffs on them. Newer PDAs have Wi-Fi, touch screens, can read e-mail, record video, play music, etc.

PDA's processor is a chip which makes the device work. PDAs can have different processors depending on their speed. If admission to the Internet, UPS battery, or video recording is required, the PDA wants to have a speedy processor.

PDAs are operated by batteries. There are two types of PDA battery: removable and fixed. Older PDAs make use of alkaline battery. The user would have to take out and replace when they ran out. The majority of new PDAs have Li-ion batteries that can be rechargeable. PDAs employ additional battery power while playing video, accessing Internet or transmitting data using Bluetooth. Big and bright screens also grasp more power. This makes the battery to run out more rapidly.

Aviod listening MP3 while driving (Sep 08, 2008)

A pedestrian rights group says a new police crusade caution road users of the risk of MP3 players does not go far enough, and that listen in to portable devices such as mp3 portable music player or iPods while driving should be made a illegal offence.

NSW Police commence a movement this week meant for pedestrian and motorists, caution of an augmented menace of misfortunes while pay attention to music through headphones.

While police do not keep information on the number of accidents endorsed to the use of portable players, they say subjective proof recommends it is on the rise.

The communal needs to be sensitive of the collision of these new skills and the disturbance they generate, for both pedestrians and motorists alike. The police classified ad illustrates people lay down on the road with their iPod cord forming a white outline around their body.

But the chief director of the Pedestrian Council wishes to observe the devices barred for drivers and the manufacturers to put a word of warning on their packaging.

There is no plan to legislate in opposition to listen something through headphones while driving, but motorists could be fined with not being in proper control of their vehicle.

Rechargeable alkaline battery (Aug 13, 2008)

Rechargeable alkaline battery is a kind of alkaline battery that can be rechargeable. The first invention of rechargeable alkaline technology was developed by Battery Technologies Inc in Canada and accredited to Pure Energy, Rayovac and Grandcell. Subsequent copyright and progress in technology have been introduced by Pure Energy, the remaining maker of rechargeable alkaline batteries. The shapes consist of AAA, AA, C, D and snap-on 9-volt batteries. Rechargeable alkaline batteries have the capability to hold their charge for years, not like NiCd and NiMH batteries which self-discharge in 90 days. If produced accurately, rechargeable alkaline battery are an environmental friendly form of energy storage. At present pure energy rechargeable batteries are cast-off into fertilizer for the corn and potato industry by RMC recycling in Canada..

Battery recycling (Aug 11, 2008)

Battery recycling is recycling actions that try to decrease the quantity of batteries being disposed as municipal solid waste. It is extensively promoted by environmentalists worried about pollution, mainly of land and water, by the accumulation of heavy metals and other toxic chemicals from batteries.

Most types of batteries can be recycled. Though, some batteries are recycled more willingly than others, such as lead-acid automotive batteries (97% are recycled) and button cells (because of the worth and toxicity of their chemicals). Other types, such as alkaline battery and rechargeable, can also be recycled.

These batteries include but are not limited to: Car Batteries, Golf Cart Batteries, UPS Battery, Industrial Fork-Lift Batteries, Scooter Battery, and Commercial Batteries. These can be regular lead-acid, SLA, Gel Type, or AGM batteries.

What is a camcorder? (Aug 04, 2008)

A camcorder is a handy consumer electronics tool for video recording video and soundtracks using an integrated recorder unit. The camcorder include both video camera and video recorder in single unit, hence its compound name. When we match with previous technology, an acquisition and recording devices would be separate.

The most primitive camcorders which were developed by companies like JVC, Sony, and Kodak, used analog videotape. From1990s recording onto digital tape has turn out to be the standard. But from early 2000s tape as storage media is being slowly replaced with tape-free solutions like optical disks, hard disk drives and solid-state memory.

All tape-based camcorders have detachable media in form of video cassettes. Solid-state camcorders can have neither removable media in form of memory cards, nor built-in memory, nor both. HDD-based camcorders generally have non-removable media in form of a hard disk drive.

Camcorders that don’t make use of magnetic tape are frequently called as tapeless camcorders. Camcorders which use two different types of media, like built-in HDD and memory card, are repeatedly called as hybrid camcorders.
